The Silk Road generally refers to the land silk road. Broadly speaking, it can be divided into "the Silk Road on land" and "the Silk Road on sea".
The Silk Road on land originated in the Western Han Dynasty (202-8 BC), when Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty sent Zhang Qian to the western regions in order to open up a land channel starting from Chang'an (now Xi'an), the capital, to Central Asia and West Asia through Gansu and Xinjiang, and connecting Mediterranean countries.
Our Silk Road tours take the time tracing the fascinating history of different routes through the Shananxi, Gansu, Xinjiang, and through remote areas that rarely benefit from tourism, where local guides are an invaluable key to understand the culture. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of traditional ways of life in communities along the way.
