The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, referred to as "Xin 新", is located in Northwest China, with Urumqi as its capital. It is one of the five ethnic minority autonomous regions in China. Covering an area of 1,664,900 square kilometers, it is the largest provincial administrative region in China, accounting for about one sixth of China's total land area.
The mountain ranges and basins are arranged alternately, and the basins are surrounded by mountains, which is known as "three mountains and two basins". The Altai Mountains in the north, the Kunlun Mountains in the south, and the Tianshan Mountains lie across the central part of Xinjiang, dividing Xinjiang into two parts: the Tarim Basin in the South and the Junggar Basin in the north. It is customary to say that the south of Tianshan is the South Xinjiang, the north of Tianshan is the North Xinjiang, and the Hami and Turpan basins are the East Xinjiang.
The lowest point in Xinjiang, Turpan Aiding Lake, is 155 meters below sea level (also the lowest point in China). The highest point, Chogori peak, is located on the Kashmir border, with an elevation of 8,611 meters. These mountains breed various landscapes in Xinjiang, including snow peaks, forests, lakes, grasslands, deserts, yadan rockforms and canyons.
